If It’s Tuesday, This Must Be Provo
The 1969 movie “If It’s Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium”, starring Suzanne Pleshette, inspired this blog post’s title.
Quoting the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), “A group of travelers from the United States race through seven countries in 18 days.” is a simple description of the movie’s plot.
But the real inspiration for this post comes from a woman named Lorie Hutchison, who today is on Day 6 of a north-to-south trek across Utah in which she is running a marathon every single day for eighteen days (another parallel to the movie).
Day 6 entails running from Pleasant Grove to Salem, passing through Provo in the middle of the day.
Ms. Hutchison set up the website 2GoodLegs.org and what she calls her “2 Good Legs Run” to inspire others to exercise twenty-six minutes per day for eighteen days and to donate to the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
You can follow Lorie’s daily progress on a special page that reports her location transmitted by her SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger.
I am inspired by what Lorie Hutchison is doing. But her plan to run a marathon every day for eighteen days confounds my understanding of the need for recovery time. Then again, famous American marathoner Bill Rodgers reportedly used to run 200 miles per week. That works out to an average of a marathon-busting 28.5 miles every day.
And I am fascinated by the use of GPS for tracking Lorie’s progress.
What is the most that you have ever run or walked day after day? Have you ever used a GPS locator to help others to track you? Please leave a comment here. Thanks!
